How I use social media to sell and promote my businesses

I joined the Body Shop at Home in May 2020 and obviously with the lock down in place, I couldn’t go out and do the typical parties that were associated with the brand. So I learned very quickly how to use social media to my advantage. I have worked the algorithms and made a successful business out of the Body Shop at Home, my own craft business and my cleaning business. On top of that it got me a place on the management team of the Dudley District of Read Easy UK as Publicity Officer. So I thought I would share my top tips for making the most of your social media profiles.

  1. Get out there and seen. This means getting onto all the socials that you can. I am of an age that things like Snapchat but Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and TikTok I can get on with! It is up to you if you want separate profiles for the things you are doing but I find switching between them clunky. So I have multiple Facebook groups and pages and then just one of the others. If you have multiple profiles, pages or groups, remember you need to post to all of them as listed below.
  2. Each day, pick a letter of the alphabet and go through your friends or those you follow starting with that letter. React to at least one of their posts, the more recent the better. Commenting is also a great idea if you do so without being creepy! This is easier to do on some platforms than others but is a vital step.
  3. Find groups where you can advertise your business and make links with people – this is mainly on Facebook. Find your local groups, groups of things you like doing, makeup groups, sport groups, whatever floats your boat. You need to be able to make genuine connections with the people in the groups so don’t just join everything you can do – it won’t help!!
  4. In these groups, react to comments and make your own comments too. If you make a connection with someone, request to be their friend with a little comment like ‘I feel we really got on when we chatted in xxxxxx group’. Just don’t be weird!!!
  5. Spend 10 minutes a day going through your stories and reacting to all if you can. But be wary of companies. Don’t like ‘5 minute craft’ videos else you won’t be able to get rid of them, for example!!
  6. Spend 10 minutes a day going through your feed and reacting and commenting to your friends posts.
  7. Keep your profile active but don’t overdo it. You shouldn’t be posting things in quick succession as this plays havoc with your algorithms. Once in a morning, once in the afternoon and once in the evening.
  8. You must also react and comment to every single person who comments on your posts. This will help solidify the links between you and the other people in your algorithm.
  9. Consistency is key. Keep your group/page active and include interaction posts as well as selling or information posts. And always reply to people! It’s only polite if nothing else.
  10. Lastly I want you to try and stop using Facebook messenger and Whatsapp to chat with the people you are in business with. This might be other consultants or members of your team. As both of these are owned by Meta, it means that they contribute to the algorithm.

If you can do all of these, you should see your interaction increase. The basis of your algorithm is that it tries to figure out who wants to see your posts and who you want to interact with but you have to teach it.
