List three jobs you’d consider pursuing if money didn’t matter…..

As a child, I wanted to be a teacher but my uncle put me off with talk of ask the paperwork he had to do as a head of department in a secondary school. So I went into science instead. I still couldn’t quite shake the teacher need though and became and teacher of tap dancing and a Sunday school teacher. So I think my top job would be a teacher. Primary school though! None of this teenager malarkey!

Secondly I’d love to have worked with a children charity. Having seen various groups at Christian events that I’ve been to, it really intrigues me how much certain charities really help children.

Lastly I wish I could be a minister in my church. I go to a Methodist church and am working on my worship leader and local preacher qualifications. The unfortunate thing about this is that you need to move around quite a lot and I really like it where I am!!

So for now, I’m settled trying to earn enough money to put food on the table and pay the bills!!

If you fancy helping put a few extra pennies into my account, please feel free to have a look through my links: linktr.ee/hannahwj

Thank you 😘

What aspects of your cultural heritage are you most proud of or interested in?

As a white Christian woman in the UK, there are so many parts of my cultural heritage that I’m a horribly ashamed of! However my ancestors were part of the female nail and chain makers in the Cradley Heath in the West Midlands in the early 1900s and I am so so proud of them and all that they achieved.

Those women went on strike to earn a living wage and they got it!!! I sometimes have to remind myself of this is I’m a having a day feeling sorry for myself – the could have lost their jobs but they kept fighting for what was right and they won!!

Anyone having an off day, week, month or year, keep going! You’re doing brilliantly and this will be part of your history that your descendants will look back on and be proud of howI strong you were 😘

What brands do you associate with?

I didn’t know whether I wanted to write about the brands I associated most with or those that I promote. I’ve gone for a bit of both!!

The 2 brands I associate personally with are Devine chocolate and Frank water. I don’t even know Frank still exists 😂 Both of these support my Christian values, are delicious and were sponsors at Greenbelt festival when I was going regularly!

On a professional level, I work with a few different brands:

Heaven Sent is a clothing brand that I am newly affiliated with. It has lovely styles, good prices and quick delivery.

WJ Beauty is my Body Shop at Home business. I sell Body Shop products for less than the shops and it’s a personalised service with me too.

Heaven Scent is my Scentsy business where you can get warmers, wax melts and all sorts of home fragrance.

Lastly is my craft business with my mom called The Gift Horse. We both have a crafty side (as in hobbiest, not being sneaky!!!) We sell cards, woollen products, vinyl and resin bits and pieces.

I’m a bit of Jack of all trades but master of none!!! 😂

My Testimony

I am starting to look at extending my Worship Leaders course qualification into a Local Preacher qualification and part of that is to present my testimony as a recording or a blog post. So I thought I would actually write it as a post!!

I have always had a faith. It wasn’t something which dawned on me in a flash of light, but has always been there and has grown as I have. When I was 3 months old I was Christened into the Methodist Church where my mom and uncle had been christened but I didn’t really start going regularly until I was 3. My mom or dad would take me and as I got older, they dropped me off and left me in the Sunday School.

In our church, the Sunday School (which was called Junior Church at the time) and the Senior church were all in the service together at the start. After the call to worship, one of the groups from the Junior church stood up at the front of the church and presented something from their group sessions. We call this ‘opening church’. This was on a rota and the content varied from a talky bit through to full blown skits and activities. This was the start of me standing up in front of a church full of people and discussing my faith.

This continued through my teenage years and I was 14 when I wrote and presented my first service. I did it with the rest of the teenage group and I was so nervous! Then the group leader was ill and couldn’t make it and it was all on me. I really understood then what ‘church family’ meant as everyone helped us along and carried the service.

When I was 16, I agreed to take over one of the older leaders opening church. I didn’t have a group so I roped in as many of the members of the congregation and Junior church each time I got up. This enabled me to set my style and I became good at engaging the congregation. The leader I took over from gave me a poem which is below and it really kick started my relationship with God.

GUIDANCE: GOD, YOU AND I DANCE

When I meditated on the word Guidance,

I kept seeing ” dance” at the end of the word.

I remember reading that doing God’s will is a lot like dancing.

When two people try to lead, nothing feels right.

The movement doesn’t flow with the music,

and everything is quite uncomfortable and jerky.

When one person realizes that, and lets the other lead,

both bodies begin to flow with the music.

One gives gentle cues, perhaps with a nudge to the back

or by pressing lightly in one direction or another.

It’s as if two become one body, moving beautifully.

The dance takes surrender, willingness,

and attentiveness from one person

and gentle guidance and skill from the other.

My eyes drew back to the word Guidance.

When I saw “G” I thought of God, followed by “u” and “i”.

“God, “u” and “i” dance.”

God, you, and I dance.”

When I was 20, I took on a group in what had been renamed from Junior church to JClub. The children in the group were a nightmare to teach but I loved every minute and I learned how to answer their questions and pass the Word onto a different age bracket. I still have this group but the children are different! It has been 18 years since that first round of children! During this time, I joined the course my church was running to become a member of the church. I was so excited but when I had just turned 21, my dad passed away having suffered with lymphoma. His cancer has left him very weak and it was only a week before he passed that he was able to come and see me be accepted as a member into my church. This was a turning point for me. You can go one of two ways in faith when a loved one dies – you can rant and rave at God and lose it or you can trust that it is part of the plan. I went with the latter and my faith blossomed.

From this I then started to help write our anniversary services with my mom. This enabled me to explore my own faith and start getting it down in words in a way that was accessible and fun for the congregation. I now write all the carol services, advent and lent liturgies and anniversaries for our JClub and this has lead me to complete my worship leaders course.

My calling was a quiet voice so I telling me that I could go deeper when I was writing the anniversary 2022. I ignored it, thinking that I was doing just fine. Then one of my congregation members asked if I’d thought about preaching. I laughed it off saying that I was too busy. Then God gave me a break and sent me a new contractor for my business which meant I had more time. I still ignored it but God can’t be ignored. I heard that a Worship Leaders course was going to be started and low and behold, the Q&A session was on a day that I was free. I still ignored it! By now God was over being subtle! One of my friends at the church told me to go and see what it was all about. She practically forced me! And when I got to the church it was like I was meant to be there. I had no questions, everything was explained perfectly and everyone was so lovely. I finally listened to God and here I am!

To enable me to explore my faith, my relationship with God and the way I can express that and bring my own ‘Hannah style’ to worship, I am excited about doing the Local Preacher qualification next. I will keep you posted!!!

It’s been a while….

Prompt: What’s your favorite word?

Hello everyone!!!

I’m so sorry that it’s been so long since I posted. Being a ‘Busy Mommy’ has been very true these last few weeks!

After the summer holiday kicking my butt, I had a knee operation and then the kids were back to school. I had my stitches out yesterday but also woke up with an abscess under my tooth. Antibiotics seem to be working so hopefully everything is moving in the right direction.

How are you all?

The prompt for today is ‘what is your favourite word’ and this made me giggle. My favourite naughty word is ‘bo**ocks’. It just suits most occasions 😂 If we’re talking words you can use anywhere, I think it must be ‘yes’. I like hearing it and I like saying it!!! As a mom, yes isn’t something you can always say so when I get to, it’s lovely. A ‘yes day’ is a day where I say yes to pretty much anything (minds out of the gutter!!). The kids love a yes day.

What’s your favourite word?

We’re back on the Christmas train………

Today’s topic – cards!

I wrote about presents a few days ago and so I thought it was time to talk about Christmas cards. We end up sending a ridiculous amount of cards and it drives Phil mad. He doesn’t understand the need to send pieces of card to people we either see very regularly or don’t see at all. Part of me understands but the social part of me has to send them!! On top of this, Jonah and Grace like to write cards to their friends so that’s just extra to sort. So here is my list of how I get them all sorted:

  1. Write a list of all the people I want to send cards to (and those that I don’t necessarily want to send one to!!). I don’t hold back. Everyone gets put on.
  2. As soon as the children go back to school, I find out their class list and start figuring out how many I might need to sort.
  3. My initial list then gets vetted:
    • I remove all the church bods (see point 4)
    • I remove anyone that I haven’t spoken to since last Christmas. A birthday card or Christmas card does not count as talking to. If you’ve not had a conversation either face to face or digitally or seen each other in 12 months, they go!
    • I make sure I’ve got all the cards – the ones from all of us, the ones from just the children and the ones from just me and Phil.
    • Finally I see if I can put people together. For example my little bridesmaid still lives at home with her parents (2 of Jonah’s godparents) so I send 1 card instead of 2
  4. Church people – I decided a while ago that we wouldn’t give cards to the majority of our church. We give a donation to a charity and a donation to the church instead. Some of them make the cut (those I see outside of church) but the rest of them get a notice in the newsletter and a nice card from the charity we donate to!
  5. Mid-September: Once I have my finalised list, I decide how I’m making them. I have made my own Christmas cards for years now and I try and make them different each year. I make a few extra in case I mess up.
  6. Start of October: The children also like to make some (normally with a hand or foot print) so I figure out the design for these too and get them made.
  7. Mid to end of October: we write them! The children’s cards tend to take longer to write as they only have the concentration to do a few a day.
  8. End of November: they get posted!!
  9. Middle of December: the church get the newsletter information about the charity we’ve chosen and the rest of the cards get given out.

And then it starts all over again for the birthdays and then Christmas again!! I have to follow these steps otherwise I totally lose track of where I am with Christmas cards!!!

What do you do to help with the planning of Christmas?

Thrift shop day!!!

I’ve been waiting for a day that I can go out and about and start flexing my blogging muscles. I know that I’ve got a long way to go before I am good at it but I was very excited when ‘thrift shop day’ rolled round.

I decided to go into Halesowen, my nearest town, with the 20 minutes I’d got to myself and have a look through the charity shops. I wanted to spend no more than £5 and grab myself some bargains. Halesowen has at least 5 charity shops so I was fairly confident!!

I went into Save The Children first but couldn’t find anything. Scope was next door with a closing down sale and everything was £1!!! Here I found 3 tops which I fell in love with. Whoop! This left me with £2.

Next was British Heart Foundation and I saw quite a few things but they were all out of my price range so I moved onto Blue Cross. Here I found a few bits and pieces and paid £5 for 2 things to auction off for charity in my selling groups on Facebook. But I couldn’t find anything I fancied for my £2. I didn’t have time to walk to any other shops as I’d got to collect Jonah and Grace so I decided to support a local coffee shop and got a vanilla latte for £2.20.

I think my first outing as a blogger went very well and I’m thrilled to have 3 tops to add to my wardrobe, 2 things to be auctioned and a boot of money given to charity. Job done ✔️

Prompt for today: What is a word you feel that too many people use?

For me it’s not a single word or even a phrase but the use of ‘management speak’. When management (or anyone really) use things like ‘touch base’ (which makes me want to vomit!), ‘You’re not picking up what I’m putting down’ and other such nonsense it just shows how uninspired they are in their role.

People will respond better to personal comments and feedback as opposed to this learned speech. It is not something that should be in the work place at all!!!

What brings me peace?

There are a few things I can think of which bring me peace. The biggest one being my God and faith. I know I always have a friend who can calm me and take my fears, worries and joys. It brings me peace.

The next is my family. I can’t tell you how much I enjoy sitting watching them play and chat and live together. It reminds me why I am on this earth.

And lastly it’s a nice, hot bath!!! There is nothing quite like a hot bath with no interruptions. This isn’t something that happens very often with 2 small children so when it does, it’s so calming and relaxing!!!

What brings you peace?

My favourite relaxing scent and warmer

I’m sorry to say that it’s time to start looking towards Christmas………

Today’s topic – presents!

I know it is only August but there are less than 25 weeks to Christmas now and I have started my lists to get organised for Christmas! I thought I would let you know what I do and how I get on top of it all.

  1. The first thing I do is I write a list of everyone that I need to get a present for and I stick it in a google sheet.
  2. I then work my way through the box I gather through the year and allocate certain presents to certain people. These go into the second column in the spreadsheet
  3. Next I clump everyone who doesn’t have a present allocated together is groups – children, adults, family and friends.
  4. I run through the groups that are left and have a nosy through the internet to find something cheap enough for us to buy!
  5. I’ll then start buying a few bits at a time when my bank account allows and pop them in the box.
  6. A bit closer to the time, when the parties and gatherings are booked in, I then add in the date the present needs to be ready by and I order my list my that. I then know who needs a present more urgently than others and the order in which I need to wrap them!

I repeat all of these steps for cards – I make them myself and this year is going to be very different as I won a Cricut Joy in February. I will be making them on there so I need to be double extra organised!!! Watch out for my card post!!

I also repeat all of this between Christmas and New Year for all the birthdays in the year – it means I manage to keep on top of all of that a bit easier too.

I’ve been thinking of putting an app together to help with all of this as I think that might be slightly easier. Let me know what you think 🙂
