Colouring book day!

Did you know that colouring book day was a thing? I’d got no idea until a published 2 colouring books!! So today I’m going to show you my 2 colouring books and let you in on a secret for my next one 🫢

The first colouring book I published was ‘Food with Faces’ because Grace saw one of the pictures and was almost crying laughing at it! I got more pictures together and created a 50 page colouring book which Grace loves!

My second book is a unicorn colouring book. This one is obviously inspired by Grace and has been a hit with her friends. I really enjoyed putting this together as there are so many great pictures I could have used!

My next colouring book is going to be flowers! I’m looking at lot’s of different styles of pictures and ways to present them and I’ve come up with the following to give it a different feel between pages. This should be available in the middle of August so feel free to subscribe to find out when it goes live.

What would you like to see for book 4? Let me know your ideas 🥰

Was today typical?

Well, yes and no! Here are the yeses:

The weather is typically British (very wet and windy!), I nearly killed Jonah with his new pre-teen grumpy face, my phone almost died halfway through the day, I did some laundry, I tided up, I did some work, Grace had an accident and I was cold!

Here are the nos:

I’m in a caravan, I can see the sea, it’s the first month in the 20 months since I gave up my lab job that the bills going out didn’t panic me and I went swimming without worrying about my wobbly bits and the ‘not quite got rid of all the hair’ status of my legs!!

What about your day?

Day 4 – the start of the wash out!

We always knew the holidays we take in the UK ran the risk of just being wet but we’d done really well up to this point. We had booked to go swimming this morning and Phil wanted to watch England in the Women’s World Cup so after a swim we found a lovely pub with great food, a TV and a pool table! Unfortunately that was the best of the weather for the day. We popped back to the caravan to collect a few bits to take to the beach and by the time we got down there it was raining. We went into a few shops and hoped the rain would ease up. It didn’t! A car picnic for tea still didn’t see the end of the rain and Phil had a migraine so we called it a day. Phil walked back to the caravan in the hopes the fresh air might help and I took the children back and got them showered. Phil had been back about 2 minutes when the heavens opened and it hasn’t stopped since! It’s now 10:15pm and it has been raining for 3.5 hours. We are now scouring the Internet for cheap things to do in Cornwall in the rain!! Send help!

Day 2 and 3 in Cornwall that started at 12:15am!

I couldn’t decide if this should go in ‘Day 1 in Cornwall’ but it technically falls into day two so here we are. 12:15am, Jonah appears at our bedroom door saying he can’t sleep. Phil, ever sympathetic and having been woken up, told him there was nothing he could do and to go back to bed, lie down and close his eyes. In their defence , they doing normality share a room, but it gets a bit ridiculous now. He apparently tried this but Grace and Jonah appeared at our door an hour later claiming they couldn’t sleep. Phil repeated his instructions and we dozed off again. Then, at 2:10am, I lost my temper! They appeared once more claiming they couldn’t sleep because they were hungry. HUNGRY!!! They had eaten well through the day and the reason they were hungry was because they were up!! So I told them to go and lie down facing away from each other, not talk, shut their eyes and take some deep breaths. After me shouting through the caravan wall at 2:15am for them to shut up, all was quiet.

The rest of the day was fairly standard – we explored some caves, flew the kites, Phil and Jonah explored the little island at the low tide and ended up in the pub for a drink in the evening.

Day 3 was very boring! We visited a very cute museum and then tried to go swimming. The only pool in a 20 mile radius was fully booked. So we drove for 2 hours to try and find another one. Jonah was in tears as he was desperate to swim and Grace was asleep! We found parking (eventually!) and went to the beach. Jonah loved jumping through the waves and Grace was not happy we a wave knocked her onto her bottom! Back to the caravan for some tea and an early night. Bring on day 4!

Day 1 of our Cornwall holiday and a surprise use for butter!!

We set our alarm for 7am with the idea to leave at 8am. Jonah and Grace bounded in at 7:15am and we were up! The last few bits were packed into the car, the fuel was bought and we were off from the Midlands at about 8:30am. 2 stops (one for a picnic lunch) and we arrived in Perranporth 6 hours later. Grace had fallen asleep with 5 minutes to arrival and we were all exhausted. BUT……we could see the sea!!

On the way

We had checked in to the caravan and got everything unpacked into the different rooms by 3:15pm and so decided to drive to the town as the weather was lovely. We sat on the beach, played cricket, explored the little river and pools and eventually needed tea. Grace was ridiculously hangry and it was getting cooler. The most delicious fish and chips later and everyone was feeling much happier.

Grace before chips!

After a little drive into Newquay and collecting the shopping, we went back to the caravan, all had showers and the children went to bed. Grace only got up once and then it happened. The thing which would define the holiday and live with me forever. I was trying to open the superglue to stop my car key pinging apart and I had a disaster. It went everywhere! My finger we’re stuck together, I’d got it on my trousers and top, my phone and up my arm.

Did you know that butter helps get superglue off? I sat for hours rubbing butter on my fingers and phone and most of it came off! After another hour with warm, soapy water and most of it has come off. I’m amazed! My phone is still a mess but my skin is sorted. The trousers and top are in the bin but it’s a small price to pay!!!

Day 2 with hopefully less drama coming soon.

If you could bring back one dinosaur, which one would it be?

Well this is one of the easiest prompts I’ve ever a answered! TRICERATOPS!!!! I have always loved these gentle giants after going to ‘Dinosaurs Alive’ show at Birmingham art gallery. Then Jurassic Park came along and showed them as a gorgeous animal. Finally our local safari park opened a walkthrough dinosaur exhibit and I saw their presumed size and a baby one!!! I can’t tell you more than that why, but I’d definitely bring them back!!

Jonah loving the baby triceratops
Grace with triceratops face paint (apparently!)

If you could host a dinner and anyone you invite was sure to come, who would you invite?

After thinking about this prompt, I got very emotional. I’m not one to fantasise about famous people. I’m more about family and after losing my dad 17 years ago at the age of 21, this was a bit of an unexpected kick in the gut. I’d obviously pick him and maybe my husbands nan who didn’t get to meet my daughter. If I was allowed 3, I’d choose my great gran who died when I was 16 so I got to know her well but as a stupid teenager I didn’t appreciate her.

But if you wanted to twist my arm and force famous people out of me, I’d go with Chris Hemsworth because he is beautiful, Rob Biddulph who is a favourite author of my children and seems like a genuinely nice bloke and our new King and the Backstreet Boys 😂

Modern society and being a busy mommy

I have been given a prompt to write about what I would change about modern society and I’ve given it a lot of thought in relation to my situation as a busy mommy. Here are my thoughts……

There needs to be less pressure on mothers generally. I worked in a lab as a production planner for many years and I was good at it. But because I couldn’t (and wouldn’t) increase my hours until my children were older, I was refused leadership roles and pay increases. All was done very well so I didn’t have a leg to stand on and my boss was great, it was above him that the trouble started. This lead to a breakdown in my mental health and subsequently I handed in my notice. I left in December 2021 after 16 years there and have struggled ever since you make ends meet. My husband works full time, I started a cleaning business and I was already running a Body Shop at Home business and was a tap dance teacher. I added to this a Scentsy business and a became a chair based exercise instructor working in care homes. 18 months on and I’ve started this blog and a Pinterest account and I’m trying to get started as an affiliate marketer. Childcare is easier now but I’m not making as much money. This is all because, as a mom, I need to be at home to look after my children.

I am totally aware that all of this is my own choice however the societal pressures to be perfect – have a clean house, well behaved children, be on the PTA, have a job but nothing that takes you away from your children, lose your baby weight as well as maintaining relationships – are ridiculous!! So, here’s to the summer holidays and 6 full weeks being the best mom and wife I can be but please, don’t expect clean and tidy at home or me not to shout occasionally 😂

Answering the prompt…..

What do you listen to while you work?

I listen to audio books at the moment. I’m really into John Grisham having never read any of his. I will also listen to boy bands (and that will give you a clue to my age!!) 😊
